“I think we’ll keep you here, at least for a little while.”

The man’s eyes widened. “Why?”

“That’s a good question,” Grant said. “Why?”

“Information,” Brigid said. “If you work for Mictlanx, you can probably tell us quite a bit about him.”

For the first time, Calavera showed fear. “He will kill me and my family.”

“Somebody always has to die,” Grant rumbled. “Sometimes it’s somebody who deserves to, like you. Maybe even your family.”

Brigid Baptiste was not surprised by Grant’s and Kane’s apparent coldheartedness.

It was difficult for Brigid to keep in mind that the two men had spent their entire adult lives as killers—superbly trained and conditioned Magistrates, not only bearing the legal license to deal death, but the spiritual sanction, as well.

Both men had been through the dehumanizing cruelty of Magistrate training, yet had somehow, almost miraculously, managed to retain their humanity. But vestiges of their Mag years still lurked close to the surface, particularly in threatening situations. In those instances, their destructive ruthlessness could be frightening.

Kane gestured with his Bren Ten toward the men standing with their hands up. They shifted their feet uncertainly. “Vamose,” he ordered.

The men glanced over at Tuco Calavera and Kane said angrily, “Don’t look at him. I hold your misbegotten lives in my hand, not that overstuffed bastard.”
